The Head Instructor of the Dojo is Lutie van den Berg. Lutie started karate in 1972, training in the Goju Ryu Style in Bloemfontein South Africa before moving to the Shotokan style in 1975. He was awarded the rank of 6th Dan in 2001 by the Japan Karate Association. Lutie has won numerous titles over the past 3 decades including South African JKA Junior Kumite Champion 1980, South African Defence Force Open Kumite Champion 1991. SA All Styles Champion in 1995 and more recently part of the Gold Medal winning team at the JKA SA International in 2008. Lutie has competed at numerous Shoto Cups as a member of both the South African and Australian National squads and was the Australian JKA National Coach for both the 2004 and 2006 Shoto Cups in Tokyo and Sydney.

Club Information

The style of karate we practice is known as Shotokan.

The Mackay Dojo  was founded in April 2001. We have a purposed built studio  with permanent mats to train on. The dojo caters for students of all ages and with a variety of different needs .

The students of the Mackay Karate Centre have been very successful at State, National and International level with 9 Mackay Students selected to represent Australia at the Gichin Funakoshi Cup (JKA World Championships).

In 2008 , 4 Mackay Students were selected to represent Australia at the 6th WKC Junior and Cadet World Championships in Novo Mesto (Slovenia). The Mackay Karate Centre students won 2 gold medals and 3 bronze medals at this event.


Location

Training is held at our dojo in Fursden street, Glenella. We have classes suitable for all ages and levels of expertise that are conducted in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere.

Mon:   5.30 pm to 7.30 pm
Tue:    4.30 pm to 6.30 pm
Wed:   6.00 pm to 8.00 pm
Fri:      6.00 pm to 8.00 pm (squad members only)
